Fanfic, Fanfic Everywhere ... But Nothing A Spreadsheet Can't Handle!

So as I mentioned last week, I'm really into Wattpad these days and, while I am using it to publish original fiction, I am also using it to publish my fanfiction. Then there is also a new blogging platform called Pillowfort, which is in beta at the moment, but seems to be just the place fandom and social media needs.

Wattpad

There is a thriving fanfiction community on Wattpad and it is still growing. When I first dipped my toe in a few years ago it all seemed to be One Direction fic, but digging deeper there is much more and expanding these days. Now while none of us can make money off of fanfic, as is proper, it is a very useful tool for expanding our audience.

Because of this I am working on adding many of my fanfiction works to my Wattpad library so my audience over there can enjoy them as well.

Pillowfort

It's a site that is still growing, but it allows the kind of discourse Livejournal was always good at, as well as offering the reblogging functionality and media flexibility of Tumblr. Adding my fanfiction over there is a no-brainer for me :)

Fanfiction vs Original Fiction

Fanfiction is looked down on by some, but most people who read it are avid book worms. They love to read and read lots. It is only logical that there will be those who read fanfic and original ficiton at the same time. One kind of fiction may be set in another creator's universe while the other is in our own fictional universe, but they still have many things in common.

For example:

• I love vampires and have made it my business to write them into every fandom I can manage when writing fanfic.
• I write lots of original vampire fiction too.

or

• Most of my fanfiction is slash = male/male pairings.
• I write lots of lgbtqia original fiction.

Hence I have a crossover in my audience reading tastes. Not everyone will want to jump from one to the other, but the cross-pollination is there.

The Issue

Only one problem - I have fanfiction all over the place and I'm not sure where all of it is. Hence, this week, I have set myself the task of finding all the major places I have posted it and creating Google Sheets so I can keep track of it.

I have 338 works on AO3, but I've already found several small fics that seem to have been overlooked when going through my tags on Livejournal.

My reasoning is thus - if I have a place where everything is recorded I will know where to find it should anything happen for reasons not yet known. And I also like organising things, so my inner librarian is very happy. As long as my inner child and my inner librarian never meet, everything should be fine ;).

Over the last few years I have been writing fanfiction less and less, but I have to say, Wattpad and Pillowfort are beginning to reignite my fire, which, in turn, is helping with my original fiction mojo as well. It seems when I light one creative fire they all burn brighter :).

Recipe: Spring Vegetables with Roast Chicken and Feta (Gluten Free) #TipsTuesdays

So I tried out a new recipe last night and Rob gave it a 9.5 out of 10, so I had to share. It's based off this one on GoodFood, but I added and changed a few things, so this is my version :).

Now this recipe only fed two of us, but I had 2 chicken thighs and Rob had the other 7 because he had just finished in the gym and was craving the protein, hence I think it would serve 3 comfortably.

This recipe is entirely gluten free.

For a Vegetarian Version sans Chicken

I think it would be very easy to convert this to being a vegetarian dish with just a few changes. Quorn pieces or baby new potatoes would make a good substitute for the chicken, but I'd add about 100ml of vegetable stock as well to make up for the lack of chicken juices that are released during cooking. Also, watch the cooking time and just take it out when everything is tender. Always check your cheese as well, just in case, to make sure it doesn't use animal rennet.

Spring Vegetables with Roast Chicken and Feta

Serves 3 (to serve 4 just up the number of vegetables)

Ingredients

• 1 pack of chicken thighs (8 or 9) (I used thigh fillets because I hate dealing with bones when eating but with skin on the bone works too if you like crispy skin etc) 
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 lemon (the original recipe zested the lemon, but I hate lemon zest in things and you still get all the flavour without that)
• 4 shallots
• 4 sprigs of rosemary or 2 tsp dried rosemary (guess who didn't have fresh rosemary last night :))
• 2 large roasted red peppers (from a jar)
• 1 large courgette
• 250g peas (the original recipe wanted fresh, but they are often hard to get and frozen work well)
• ~100g asparagus spears
• ~100g tender stem broccoli (Morrisons do a nice mix pack of asparagus and tender stem broccoli, which is what I used)
• 100g feta (about half an average block)

Equipment

• 1 large roasting tray
• 1 sharp knife
• 1 chopping board
• 1 spatula
• 1 saucepan

Instructions

1. Pre-heat the over to 200C/400F | 180C/350F fan | Gas 6
2. Cut you lemon into eight wedges.
3. Put the lemon into the roasting pan, giving each wedge a gentle squeeze to release some of its juice.
4. Chop the shallots and add them to the roasting tin. I like my shallots to melt away into nothing so I chop them finely, but you can have larger rings if you would like.
5. Drain and chop the roasted red peppers into bite sized pieces and add to the roasting pan. I always split the ones I bye down the middle first and then make sure there are no seeds left in them.
6. Split the courgette down the centre and the chop into thick chunks on the diagonal. Add to the pan.
7. Add the oil and mix everything around. I added just a pinch of smoked salt at this point because my pepper were preserved in brine, so not much salt was needed, if yours are just in water you might like to add a pinch more.
8. Add the chicken thighs and mix. If you are using skin on thighs, make sure they all end up skin side up once they are coated in the oil.
9. Put the roasting tray in the oven and cook for 40-50 mins until the chicken is cooked all the way through.
10. Take out of the oven and cover with a lid or foil to let the chicken rest.
11. Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and cook the peas, asparagus and broccoli for 4 mins.
12. Drain the vegetables and add to the roasting tin, mixing everything around to coat the vegetables in all the lovely cooking juices.
13. Crumble over the feta and serve.

This really was delicious and its packed with vitamins and good things.

The Marketing Blues aka Motivation, Where Art Thou?

I have to admit that I am finding it hard to get back in the swing of things now the holiday season is out of the way. It's been so nice not having to do anything to do with books and marketing for a while that I found myself staring at my twitter this morning wondering why I was bothering.

Logically I know why I'm bothering, but a big part of me just wants to eat chocolate and watch TV :).

It's not the writing part that is the problem - I have ideas coming out of my ears, its the whole trying to convince people to buy things that has me wistfully thinking of the relaxing days between Christmas and New Year. Truth be told, I hate marketing. It's not why I signed up to be an author, it just happens to be an integral part of the job these days.

Unfortunately its very necessary.

So now I must kick my posterior into gear and jump back on the horsey, as it were.

It's time to set my alarms that tell me what to do when. They were working really well last year until Windows updated and broke the application on my PC. They wold go off an hour out and then refuse to be turned off. Most off putting. I shall put them in my phone this time ... hopefully that won't decide to go bonkers as well :).

To all those with similar marketing blues, I wish you much luck (because we all know one retweet or one share in the right place can make all the difference :)) and the perseverance to march into the new year strong, with a smile on your face.

We can do this!

Somewhere along the line Harry forgot how to think. When his brain finally came back online his fist had teeth marks from where he had been trying to keep quiet. He could be very loud if he wasn't careful.

"Back with me, Potter?" Draco asked with a superior smirk.

Given that Draco was just putting away his wand, Harry had to assume there was no longer any evidence of their liaison to be found. It was scary how good they both were at that.

"Wow," Harry said, feeling it was safest not to try for complex.

Draco smiled even wider.

"So what now?" Harry asked.

Draco liked the fact Harry seemed willing to defer to him in pureblood matters; it showed a willingness to learn he had entirely missed in his rival at school.

"How about we do this properly where people can see?" Draco suggested. "I know this lovely little restaurant, public, but not too public, and I'll bring a ring this time."

"A ring?"

"Well it is an engagement."

"Do I get to give you one as well?"

"It you would like, but not immediately, you're not supposed to know, remember?"

Sometimes he despaired of Gryffindors, although Harry looked very pleased at the thought of giving him a ring, so he couldn't be too scathing.

"What kind of ring is suitable?"

Harry looked adorably worried all of a sudden.

"I'll owl you the details," Draco told him, smiling fondly.

He was so gone it was silly. Astoria was most likely going to laugh at him for taking this long to realise what he had been working up to.

"Of course we really should return to the office Christmas party first," Draco pointed out. "Pretend you've had too much punch to explain that even-more-dazed-than-usual expression."

Harry just kissed him.

The Truth Will Out (Advent Drabble 17)

"Okay, Slytherins, I get it," Harry said at Draco's reaction. "You really think Astoria planned this?"

"Or something like this," Draco replied.

Harry let that sink in.

"Does that mean that you were getting fed up of broom cupboards and dark corners as well?"

Draco frowned and Harry was pretty sure the other wizard was mentally berating himself for letting yet more information slip out.

"I may have mentioned it a couple of time, yes," Draco finally admitted.

Harry's cheeks ached at the smile that broke over his face. Of course a Slytherin would never make the obvious first move.

Negotiations (Advent Drabble 18)

"So," Harry said when he finally managed to control the smile, "where do we go from here?"

"Well, how attached are you to your dingy little flat?" Draco asked.

"It's not dingy," Harry protested, "well not very dingy."

It had been going cheap when he needed a place near to work.

"That's doesn't answer the question."

"Not very," he admitted.

"How do you feel about the Manor?"

"I haven't seen it since ..." he didn't need to elaborate.

"It's changed a lot and my parents live abroad."

"Okay then."

"Good, would you like your own rooms or to share mine?"

"Um," Harry didn't really know what to say to that. "Right now?"

"Well, soon," Draco replied. "The minimum suitable engagement would be about a month because everyone will assume we've been shagging anyway. Then there's the ceremony, but you could move in straight away. You'd have to pretend to have your own rooms at first for appearances sake, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to."

Harry felt lighter than air. He still couldn't shift the stupid smile.

"Okay," he said, because he wasn't a Gryffindor for nothing.

Maybe the polish fumes were getting to him.

The Whole Truth? (Advent Drabble 20)

"We'll have to put an announcement in the papers," Draco mused and Harry could almost see the mental checklist.

"We should tell our friends and families first," Harry pointed out.

"Well, if you insist," Draco grudgingly agreed. "But you can never tell anyone about this."

"It's just not dignified."

"But it is kind of funny, especially since we were basically set up by your wife."

Draco scowled.

"You can't."

"Oh Merlin's balls," Draco said, "I've been played."

Draco paused and thought about what he was doing. This was supposed to have been a game, a bit of fun, a chance to try out The Boy Who Lived And Became A Very Shaggable Man.

It wasn't.

That this solution had even come to mind told him that much.

"In the old forms there is such a thing as a consort," he finally said. "It's mostly not done now because lovers are easier, but it's still a respected tradition."

"And what does that mean exactly?" Harry asked.

Draco breathed deeply, what he was about to admit made him vulnerable.

"Repression worked for Muggles, why not us?"

Draco glared at being interrupted.

"Because repression tends to twist a person's magic and we do not need more Dark Lords running around," he said.

"Yes, we have enough of those anyway."

It was hard to argue with that point.

"But for pureblood families, heirs are very important, so they came up with a solution: A marriage contract which is only about children and the position of consort, which definitely isn't."

Draco was surprised by the way his heart twisted when Harry thought about that.

"I love her, she loves me, but we both have too much baggage," Harry said. "We make much better friends. I could ask you the same, you could be discrete with others."

And that was the crux of it.

"Oh Merlin's balls," he said, "I don't want discrete with anyone else."

Harry didn't know what to say to that.

"Compelling?"

"Bloody Chosen Ones and their ridiculously green eyes," Draco muttered.

Harry was pretty sure he wasn't supposed to have heard that.
