Writing and General Update

Hello, one and all. Sorry I have been remiss in posting here recently, I've been super focused on writing and getting one of my novels ready for submission.

The Writing

I've mentioned before that I'm writing a novel series based off of my novella Mina's Children: The Legacy of Dracula and I've been focusing on that a lot. It's going well and the second books is shaping up nicely, while plans to extend Mina's Children into a novel are afoot too.

It's weird, but having a notepad for this one has been the key. I make no excuses for my brain, it's just the way it is!

The Submitting

Last year I finished writing a novel called Ellie Grange and the Mythical Space Diamond and I knew I wanted to try and land an agent with it. However, I've been letting it sit, because I also knew I wanted to change the ending a little. It just wasn't quite right.

Turns out, with some distance, it only needed a little tweaking to fix what felt wrong, so yay!

An agent just requested the manuscript after reading my query letter, so I really, really hope they like the book. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Wattpad

As I've mentioned before, I'm an ambassador over at Wattpad - which means I'm a volunteer who helps out with some stuff, and it's a great place to hang out. Link to Ambassdors profile on Wattpad.

I've been posting original fic and fanfic over there for a while and I've decided to do a big push with some of my old fanfics, to share them with a new audience. Those of us who came from Livejournal know AO3 is THE place for fanfic, but there are many, many people on Wattpad who have never heard of it.๐Ÿ˜ฎ My plan is to entice people in with fanfic and then hopefully hook them with my original work too ๐Ÿ˜Ž.

Wattpad is a little pickier about what content is and is not allowed than AO3 - for example, no PWPs ๐Ÿ˜ญ, a story has to have plot as well as sex or it's not allowed, but there is still a thriving fanfic community over there.

I'm stacking up a whole heap of fanfic to post and having a lot of fun doing it (not that I'm not posting original work too). It gives me a chance to:

  1. re-edit some of my older work - I'm looking at you wayward commas, or commas lost in action, or OMG how many "and then"s are there in this fic?! ๐Ÿ˜‚
  2. create covers for them - which is fun

There are some that can't go over because they aren't suitable, but I can rarely ever write a story with out it growing a plot, so most of them are good.

I did discover I have one Weiss Kreuz story which is basically 17K of porn. It does have plot, but the plot revolves around the sex, so I'm thinking it's probably on dodgy ground. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The Issue of Plagiarism

And before you ask "What about the plagiarism problem" - because I have had so many people ask me that when I mention Wattpad, I have no idea why some people think Wattpad has a reputation for plagiarism and not helping writers.

Yes, people's stories sometimes get copied and re-uploaded by unscrupulous individuals to Wattpad or other sites, but Wattpad has a very clear, easy to follow procedure for having them removed. As I mentioned to someone on Twitter, I have had way more problems with people stealing and uploading my eBooks from other sites like Smashwords and Amazon than anything on Wattpad.

Wattpad has more than 65 million users, so there are bound to be some bad apples, but they (unlike some other sites I could mention) work very hard to make sure they are dealt with.

Canadian Lovelies

Wattpad are Canadian, but they have users from all over the planet. They are also lovely๐Ÿ’– just like their country's reputation and they have a whole section of their site dedicated to helping writers expand their audience and get the most out of the platform. Wattpad loves writers and it wants writers to love them.

The Cold Inside: Call of the Necromancer - #Free #Novella #WriterlyWednesday

The Cold Inside: Call of the Necromancer

Free Novella

The Open Novella Contest happens once a year over on Wattpad. It has 3 rounds:

Round 1 - 2000 words
Round 2 - +6000 to reach 8000 words
Round 3 - ~12000 to reach 20,000 words

Then there is a long list and a short list, after which the winners are announced.

It's a lot of fun and I've taken part both years. Last year I came 5th, this year I made it to round 3 but didn't make the long list, but still had a blast. My novella is up on Wattpad for everyone to read:

The Cold Inside: Call of the Necromancer
by Natasha Duncan-Drake

Becky is staying with her parents, after an acrimonious breakup, when her bedroom cupboard starts singing to her in the middle of the night. As she investigates she finds a long forgotten heirloom, bequeathed to her by her great great aunt Rosalind years ago. Things get really weird and kind of creepy when it starts to talk.

Read on Wattpad

It has ghosts and revenants and magic and lesbians.

I'd love to know what you think.

~*~

And an added bonus, Soph entered this year as well and her story is in the shortlist. Go check it out, I beta read it and it is an excellent story.

Old Earth Rising: Reed-Hall Investigations
by Sophie Duncan

Something strange about your crime scene? Every well-informed copper in Britain knows it's time to call Reed-Hall Investigations, even if they'd never admit it afterwards.

Ally Reed and her investigative partner, Sherrod Reed-Hall, are called in when an archaeological site in the Highlands of Scotland unearths more than just grave goods. One of the dig team has disappeared, leaving only burnt markings on the wall that give Ally's extra senses a dose of dread.

Taking on the case, Ally and Sherrod must face the most powerful foe they have ever encountered.

Fanfic, Fanfic Everywhere ... But Nothing A Spreadsheet Can't Handle!

Fanfic, Fanfic Everywhere ... But Nothing A Spreadsheet Can't Handle!

So as I mentioned last week, I'm really into Wattpad these days and, while I am using it to publish original fiction, I am also using it to publish my fanfiction. Then there is also a new blogging platform called Pillowfort, which is in beta at the moment, but seems to be just the place fandom and social media needs.

Wattpad

There is a thriving fanfiction community on Wattpad and it is still growing. When I first dipped my toe in a few years ago it all seemed to be One Direction fic, but digging deeper there is much more and expanding these days. Now while none of us can make money off of fanfic, as is proper, it is a very useful tool for expanding our audience.

Because of this I am working on adding many of my fanfiction works to my Wattpad library so my audience over there can enjoy them as well.

Pillowfort

It's a site that is still growing, but it allows the kind of discourse Livejournal was always good at, as well as offering the reblogging functionality and media flexibility of Tumblr. Adding my fanfiction over there is a no-brainer for me :)

Fanfiction vs Original Fiction

Fanfiction is looked down on by some, but most people who read it are avid book worms. They love to read and read lots. It is only logical that there will be those who read fanfic and original ficiton at the same time. One kind of fiction may be set in another creator's universe while the other is in our own fictional universe, but they still have many things in common.

For example:
  • I love vampires and have made it my business to write them into every fandom I can manage when writing fanfic.
  • I write lots of original vampire fiction too.
or
  • Most of my fanfiction is slash = male/male pairings.
  • I write lots of lgbtqia original fiction.
Hence I have a crossover in my audience reading tastes. Not everyone will want to jump from one to the other, but the cross-pollination is there.

The Issue

Only one problem - I have fanfiction all over the place and I'm not sure where all of it is. Hence, this week, I have set myself the task of finding all the major places I have posted it and creating Google Sheets so I can keep track of it.

I have 338 works on AO3, but I've already found several small fics that seem to have been overlooked when going through my tags on Livejournal.

My reasoning is thus - if I have a place where everything is recorded I will know where to find it should anything happen for reasons not yet known. And I also like organising things, so my inner librarian is very happy. As long as my inner child and my inner librarian never meet, everything should be fine ;).

Over the last few years I have been writing fanfiction less and less, but I have to say, Wattpad and Pillowfort are beginning to reignite my fire, which, in turn, is helping with my original fiction mojo as well. It seems when I light one creative fire they all burn brighter :).

Do you write or read fanfiction? What are your fandoms? If not, do you have a reason for not doing so?

The Delights of Wattpad - Come Join the Fun

The Delights of Wattpad - Come Join the Fun

Okay so I meant to post this yesterday, but got hung up on other things :) hence the Writerly "Almost" Wednesday.

I am really into Wattpad these days and post over there a lot, and I wanted to share the joy (My Profile on Wattpad).

About the Wattpad Community

Wattpad isn't like Amazon or Smashwords. It is not a site where you put your books for sale and run. Fiction on Wattpad is free, but it has some amazing opportunities for writers, as well as a phenomenal amount of content for readers.

There are some ads, but that's how the site supports itself, so it's only fair, and they are non-intrusive (unlike some sites I could mention). If you want a completely ad-free experience and to support Wattpad more, there is the new Premium service that is explained here.

Wattpad is also not just a site for fanfiction (that would be the wonderful AO3) - although some people seem to be under the mistaken impression that this is what Wattpad is for. We do have a thriving fanfiction community - I know, I post to it, but there is a huge amount of original based content too - I post to that too.

And for those worried about plagiarism (which I have seen bandied around when I've mentioned Wattpad on here before) - there is a strict code of conduct and systems in place to stop this from happening, or remove offending content if it does occur. Wattpad takes such things very seriously (Copyright FAQ).

To experience Wattpad to its fullest takes engagement - it's a community and to appreciate it best we have to become part of the community. But for a little effort, the rewards are countless. Not least of all, making friends!

click image to visit my profile
Wattpad is all about engagement. It has an Ambassadors program of users who volunteer to help Wattpad support the community. Ambassadors do things like help run certain profiles (Directory of Ambassador run profiles), and they are also there to help users.

There is a very comprehensive explanation of what the Ambassadors do on the Wattpad support site for those who are interested: Wattpad Ambassadors. And a great piece on them on the Wattpad Writers' Portal (more on this later). There is also the @Ambassadors profile which has lots of useful information too.

First things first, Wattpad is a Canadian company and we all know what a reputation Canadians have for being nice. Well Wattpad is the epitome of that - they want to do everything they can to make sure their users have the best time on their site.

That being the case, there are Ambassador teams for other languages - so the site is not just all about stories in English. Wattpad has users from all across the globe and they work hard to support everyone they can.

Wattpad is for readers and writers. It has aps as well as a website, so just about anything you can do on the website, you can also do on your phone or your tablet, and vice versa.

Writing on Wattpad

Now, I will be the first to admit, when we start with Wattpad it seems a little daunting. One little account among millions with no followers and it can be like shouting into a void when we post our stories. However, Wattpad want you to find readers, they want you to succeed, hence there is:

The Writer's Portal is there to give us advice on:
  • how to become a better writer,
  • how to grow our audience
  • how to be inspired
  • as well as tell us all about programs and opportunities for writers on Wattpad.
It is a one stop shop for all the info we need to get started and to grow.

Wattpad is also not just for fiction, there is a non-fiction and a random category. Want to share your recipes with the world? Create a recipe book. Have an inner Wordsworth trying to get out? Publish your poetry. (There are comprehensive Content Guidelines here if you are worried what you want to post is not allowed).

Reading on Wattpad

Want to just read amazing stories? That's okay too, you don't have to be a writer to be on Wattpad, and writers will adore you even more if you vote and/or leave comments on the stories and story parts that you enjoy.
  • Wattpad has recommended reading lists and features stories to help us find the best of the best.
  • Ambassador run profiles have reading lists for their genres/subjects and some have anthologies full of contest winners
  • The tagging system makes it easy to find what we're looking for (Searching with Tags).
  • Prominent covers and easy to see descriptions help us to find stories worth a look.
With every account we have the ability to create our own reading lists so we can always find the stories we really liked again, and to keep up with updates on serialised fiction. Some accounts become a hub of reading lists to recommend stories to other users too.

There are also the Wattpad Clubs to find like minded people, talk about particular genres, tell the world about our current story (we just have to make sure we do that in the right thread ), and everything like that.

In Summary

So basically, what I'm trying to say is Wattpad is a great place for writers and readers alike. It has a community behind the stories and profiles, that is rich and diverse.

If you're stuck, ask an Ambassador for help (look for this symbol beside the profile name) and they will point you to where you can find the solution. Or there is Wattpad Support who have a comprehensive help FAQ and are very good at sorting out user issues that aren't covered in the documentation.

Wattpad is a rich community with some amazing quality fiction, as well as enthusiastic new writers with some brilliant new ideas. It is a platform for newbies and experienced creators alike. It is a platform for anyone who loves stories. Come and join the fun.

Any questions?

Mina's Children is Top 5 in Wattpad's Open Novella Contest

Mina's Children is Top 5 in Wattpad's Open Novella Contest

The Open Novella Contest at Wattpad is over!

They announced the top 5 winners yesterday and my novella, Mina's Children: The Legacy of Dracula, came in at #5. Woohoo!

I have no idea how many people entered originally, but I can say that after Round 1, 550 novellas went on to Round 2, then 217 to Round 3 and there were 36 finalists. I can only imagine how much work went into organising the contest. Kudos to the organisers.

Wattpad is a free to read platform, so all the winners are there for your reading pleasure. Here's mine :), but check out the other four from the top five too - links below.

Mina Harker (nรฉe Murry) was changed by Dracula's attentions, and so were her descendants. Reggie comes from this line of vampire hunters, nature's definitive balance to the darkness. Her whole life has been building up to this one mission in Romania, to face the evil that started everything for her family.  Unfortunately there are others with their eyes on Dracula too, and Reggie has run right into them. She must make them allies or remove them from the game before she can face the ultimate foe.

Two Free Short Stories for The Romantic at Heart

Two Free Short Stories for The Romantic at Heart

Good morning on this snowy Wednesday. I hope you are all warm and safe. Thanks to dear old Valentine, February is the month of love and Wattpad had lots of contests running. I have entered two of them and hence, today, I present 2 free short stories that have a side of romance. One is 2K words and the other is ~2.5K, so they are both the prefect length for a coffee break.

Castle In the Air

Katie's Great Nana Brenna always told the story of the cursed princess and the castle that appears every one hundred years. Only Katie ever believed it was true.

genre: paranormal, fantasy, vampire, lgbtq+, romance
length: 2K words

Oh Dear

written for the Valentine's Contest 2018

Lorrie is about to discover she had been oblivious for far too many years. Her wife, Mags, has a really big, supernatural secret, and their neighbours aren't exactly average people either.

genre: paranormal, werewolf, lgbtq+, romance, humour
length: ~2.5K words

P.S. If you enjoy the stories, I would be incredibly grateful if you would hit the vote button on the chapter at Wattpad - it's one of the ways stories become more visible on the platform. Many thanks.

Yay! Mina's Children is through to the shortlist for the Open Novella Contest

Mina's Children is in the Shortlist

Please excuse me while I crow just a little bit :) I found out this morning that Mina's Children: The Legacy of Dracula is a finalist in Wattpad's Open Novella Contest.

In case anyone is unfamiliar with the platform, Wattpad is a free fiction site where anyone can post stories, and it is a great place to spot new talent and find new readers. It has a dedicated reading ap for most devices, as well as a website, and has millions of users.

After coming second in round 2 of the Open Novella Contest I worked really hard to come up with an ending for the novella that would entertain my readers and those judging the contest. It seems to have worked so far :).

For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Wattpad started the Open Novella Contest back in November last year. It is a multi genre contest run over many of the Wattpad Ambassador profiles with three rounds.
  • Round 1: pick a prompt, write 2K in the first 4 weeks of the contest
  • Round 2: write another 6K to bring the total up to 8K before 19th Dec
  • Round 3: write another 12K to bring the total up to 20K or there abouts before 31st Jan (writing more was an option, but only the first 20K counted in the contest)
I have no idea how many people entered Round 1, but 550 progressed to Round 2, and 217 progressed to Round 3.

That has now been narrowed down to 36 finalists, which you can see here:

I am thrilled that Mina's Children has made it through to the last 36. I have everything crossed for the final judging.

Mina's Children: The Legacy of Dracula #FreeRead

Good morning all, sorry for being AFK - I've had an awful cold and it took me out for a few days, then I had to scramble to finish and edit Mina's Children: The Legacy of Dracula before the deadline, which was yesterday.

For those who didn't see my last post, Mina's Children is a free read, and an entry into Wattpad's Open Novella Contest, which ended yesterday (31st Jan). Wattpad put out lots of prompts, one of which we had to use to inspire a novella. There were three rounds:
  • Round 1 - write 2K words
  • Round 2 - write another 6K to make it up to 8K words
  • Round 3 - write another 12K to take it up to 20K words
There are winners for Round 1 and Round 2, and at each stage the number of competitors was reduced. There will be overall winners once Round 3 has been judged, which is what is going on at the moment.

Mina's Children won 2nd place in Round 2 - yay!

As you can tell by the title, Mina's Children is technically Dracula fanfiction, but it's relatively removed from the original tale of Dracula. It's set modern day for a start, and the main character is Reggie, Mina Harker's great great granddaughter.

It is based of this prompt:
In the mythic lands of Transylvania, there lies a legend. The legend of he who does not live. The legend of he who will not die. The legend of he who roams the Borgo atop a carriage driven by steeds of rotten mass.
He has terrorised the region for centuries and now he has the free world in sight.
But there is only one person in the world who can stop this legend, this monster.
This person is the last remaining member of Mina's lineage.
I'm seriously considering expanding the novella once the contest is over, because I had so many ideas for extra scenes that I had to cut out because of the word limit (we could write a longer book, but they were only ever going to read the first 20K so it seemed sensible to use that as the limit). There are background characters I want to flesh out and the plot I want to continue.

Dracula is one of those fantastic cases where the original book is out of copyright, so derivative work is publishable too.

This is totally feeding my love of vampires and getting the creative juices flowing. Reggie is a character I was working on before the contest, but she didn't have any direction or proper roots. The prompt gave me a basis to work from that kick started a whole plot. Other characters have been popping up as I wrote.

I have to admit, for the last four or five months of 2017, creativity was in short supply. Without going into why, I am very glad to see the back of 2017 and the less said about it the better. Having a new project, as well as the ongoing one to move all Wittegen's eBooks into paperback feels brilliant.

Do you have any new projects for 2018 you are excited about, be they writing related or something else?

P.S. if you read Mina's Children and enjoy it, I would really appreciate you clicking the vote button on the story parts. It's one of the ways stories go up the rankings on Wattpad, so they are seen by lots of people. Many thanks in advance.

5 Reasons Taking Part in Challenges on Wattpad is a Great Idea #TipsTuesdays

5 Reasons Taking Part in Challenges on Wattpad is a Great Idea

So with everything that's been going on at home lately I really have gotten much writing done. It also hasn't just been a matter of time, but of motivation. My spark dried up because my brain was too busy focusing on other things. It's back, but I decided to feed the flames and make it burn brighter. One of the way I decided to do this is by joining in Wattpad challenges.

Wattpad has lots of communities (even though it actually has no structure to cope, communities have found a way :)). These communities often run challenges where writers submit their writing and there are usually prizes for the best. At the moment @WattVampires is running their Summer Challenge - Vampires Everywhere. Each week they choose a genre and writers are asked to submit a flash fic of between 50 and 200 words with vampires in that genre.

The first week was sci-fi
my submission Sunlight is here
and this week it is the classics
my submission Traitor's Fate is here.

Taking part in these challenges is great idea for many reasons and here are five:

1. They're Fun

It's fun to just grab an idea and run with it without having to worry if it will fit with anything else, or lead on to more. The challenge is the challenge and does not have to have any consequences except making sure we read the rules and tag it correctly.

2. They Get the Creative Juices Flowing

Sometimes it's good to write something we hadn't considered before. Taking a challenge from somewhere else is good for our creativity. No matter how good a writer we are, it is all too easy to get stuck in a rut, especially if we are concentrating on a big project of some kind. Taking a momentary step back and writing something completely different can spark new ideas and new thinking, which can only be good for us.

Taking part in the @WattVampires challenge has me raring to go on my other projects as well.

3. Exposure

Wattpad does have some official clubs, which are basically like bulletin boards, which help get exposure for your fiction, but the communities actually work way better. I've found that a lot of people in the clubs just post and run, the engagement is better in the commnuities.

Taking part in challenges exposes our writing to lots of like minded people and the rules often state that the entries have to be short, so people are more likely to take the plunge to give our fiction a go.

Also there is often a prize for the best (usually a banner for the cover and maybe a interview or a spotlight on the community) and honourable mentions. This can give us even more exposure to like minded readers.

4. Good Way to Find New Fic to Read

There are always excellent fics submitted to the challenges. I haven't tried one yet that does not have some gems well worth reading. Communities offer an easy way to find the kind of fiction we really want to read. It's a win, win situation and I am sure many people see them the same way.

The creativity in the challenges is usually amazing. From the same challenge completely different stories appear. For this week's classics challenge at WattVampires there are already fairy tales, a historical insert and Shakespeare, and the prompt only went up yesterday.

5. Excellent Way of Making New Friends

As I have already mentioned the communities are full of people who like the same thing we do, or we wouldn't all be hanging about in the same place. Wattpad can sometimes feel like shouting into a void because it's so big and so diverse. Catching the eyes of readers can be hard.

Taking part in challenges waves at all those like minded people and goes 'look, I write about vampires or werewolves or romance or whatever the niche of the community is'. We write our fic, they write theirs and it is a great way to get talking to people by swapping comments.

For example WattVampires has 6.5K followers but only a handful of those enter the current challenge. It's an easy way to see who is active at the moment and who might like to chat about similar things.

If we're open and friendly and drop comments we are much more likely to make friends.

Halloween here we come! New Chapters Every Day! Dead Before Dawn

Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse

To celebrate Halloween, this week there will be 7 new chapters of

Dead Before Dawn: The Vampire Curse

1 every day!

Max is still stuck in Russia and the hunters may not have given up as easily as he had hoped.
Chapter 12 - Accidents Happen (explicit version)
Chapter 12 - Accidents Happen (edited non-explicit version)
How do you accidentally kiss your friend? Ask Max!
There are two versions of this chapter - the original with an explicit sex scene and a edited version with less intimate details :).

~

Max Statton is in Moscow for the premiere of his new movie when a terrifying encounter turns his life on its head. Attacked by one of the city's resident vampires, Max is bitten and infected. Only a team of local vampire hunters prevent him being dragged into the underworld of the undead.

Fighting for his very existence, Max must resist the vampire curse trying to take over his body if he is ever to get back to his life.

~

I am very much enjoying posting Dead Before Dawn over at Wattpad. My number of followers keeps going up, which I am taking as a good sign :). So does the read and vote count on the novel.

Here's hoping everyone is enjoying reading as much as I am posting.

Wattpad is definitely not a post and run site from a writers perspective - it's much more a social media hub as well. I keep looking at the clubs, but the one that is supposed to be for chat seems a little, well, random and I have no idea what to post. So so far I have stuck to the genre specific places.

Anyone have experience with the Wattpad clubs? Where is it best to hang out?

I need to get my arse in gear and read some other people's work - I have gotten behind on that recently because I've had so much else to do.
