My AtoZ theme this year is my YouTube journey with my new fiction channel, and all that I have learned - plus some free fiction - scroll down to the embedded vid for that.

Have I found any bugs in YouTube? Only one that really confused me.

I have, on occasion received an email telling me I have a comment on a video and then have not been able to find it in YouTube studio (the place where we upload our videos) or on the video in question.

In the back end I tried turning off filters and rearranging things, but nothing showed up.

Then I went to the video live of YouTube and rather than sorting the comments by "Top Comments", I sorted them by "Newest First". Low and behold, there were my missing comments. I have no idea why this might be, except for the fact that one of the missing comments was not complimentary and the other could have been interpreted as not being nice (even though it was), so I suspect algorithm shenanigans.

There is, however, one really annoying bug I have discovered when sharing my videos, which might save people a little time.

When sharing from YouTube to Twitter, the tweet editor comes up partially filled in with content created from the title and URL of our video. This is all well and good, but it truncates the subject line of the vid, and we often want to add extra content to increase engagement with our tweets, so we have to change it.

There is, however, a bug in Twitter's front end when creating these tweets: on more than one function when creating a tweet, it reverts back to the originally created partial tweet losing all of our edits. This is very, very annoying!

This happens when:

  1. Adding in ALT text for an image for the tweet.
  2. Picking the time to schedule a Tweet

The solution is simple, but needs to be formed into a habit, so I always create a tweet in the same way:

  1. Share from YouTube
  2. Edit the tweet and add my own content
  3. Copy the whole tweet into memory
  4. Add the image to the tweet
  5. Pick the time for the tweet to be scheduled
  6. Paste the tweet back into the edit box
  7. Hit the schedule button

Anyone else run into any YouTube or social media sharing bugs? Or what is your least favourite real world bug e.g. cockroach?

  1. The hidden comment thing appears on Facebook too, and I hate it. I shouldn't go through extra hoops to see all the comments. Geez.

    1. I have a talent for finding bugs. In my previous incarnation as a software engineer, people would sometimes put in front of their code to test it because I seem to be able to break just about anything. I did some testing for the company my husband works for last year to suppliment the whole author thing, and it took me about 30 secs to break the software the first time.

    1. You're welcome - I lost so many tweets before I trained myself to copy it every single time!
      Thanks so much for visiting.

  5. Er... Yes. I think this might be too technical for me. George would have understood, I expect.

  6. Well, I applaude your persistance. I think Id hae probably thought that YouTube had gone mad and didn' tlook them up. though, why do you think the algorithm tried to hide not-nice comments?

    1. I think it's more to do with not showing them to everyone that visits - similar to them hiding the dislike count. I suspect they just didn't get it quite right.

  7. I haven't posted enough on my own YouTube channel to notice any "bugs" or anything like you've mentioned. I do share a lot of videos, but I just click "share" and haven't noticed any problems about it. So actually I don't have a clear idea what you're talking about here. Guess I'd have to get into the YouTube scene a bit more.

Real bugs? Cockroaches are very bad. I don't much like houseflies either. I rarely see many bugs around my house. I don't have a problem with that at all.

    1. It's works fine if just sharing, but I like to add an image to my tweets and I schedule them in advance, so I bump into this bug every single share! Very annoying.

I am not a fan of bugs at all and am very glad to have never come across a cockroach.
Thank you so much for visiting.

    1. It works fine most of the time, just when adding alt text to images and scheduling that it does weird things, and then only on straight shares, so I suspect not many people bump into it.

  11. Hello! I don't have a YouTube channel, but I do have a blog, and I've encountered some odd sharing-related bugs on that.
As for real-world bugs, we get these long furry... centipedes? Millipedes? Anyway, they look like moving hairballs, and they are horrible. I once found a dead one in my pillowcase. I've never felt quite the same way since, about anything.

    1. It might be a general sharing bug, I just never noticed it from anywhere else.
Ughhhh! You descriptions of bugs have made my skin craw. As a child a spider once crawled onto my pillow and I think it scarred me for life! 😆

  12. This is such a cool way to share stories! Never considered having a YouTube channel for my stories, but if I did...this would be a great resource for doing so! (Oh, and great stories too!)

  13. As we used to say in software development, "That's not a bug, it's a feature!"
I have not run into any bugs myself, but my experience is practically non-existent.

  14. Oh the lovely buggy features of software (eye roll). I'm a great watcher of YouTube but not tried to use it yet. It's kinda there in the back of my mind as something I might try, so I'll be bookmarking this series of posts to read through again.
