AtoZ2017 - H is for He-Man & Derek Hale #AtoZChallenge

Welcome to Day 8 of the AtoZChallenge and the letter H. Every day in April (except Sundays) I will be making a post about shapeshifters of all kinds. Check back to see my choices and, from time to time some flash fiction too.

H is for

He-Man

No, this isn't from the movie Masters of the Universe again because He-Man is never Adam in that. Today I am talking about the original cartoon.

Prince Adam of Eternia is given the Sword of Power by the Sorceress, which give him to power of Greyskull and transforms him into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. It also tranforms his cowardy, green pet tiger, Cringer into Battle Cat.

Frankly I never could understand how no one knew Adam and He-Man were the same person - I mean Adam even has the muscles. He doesn't even have glasses to get in the way like Clark Kent! He really only changes clothes and gets a tan ;).

Clearly people in Erternia are face blind and go by what people wear, since no character ever changed costume, ever ;).

We never watched He-man regularly, but I remember enjoying the odd episode. My husband and I watched a few recently on Amazon Prime too :). It brings back fond memories.

Werewolf of the Day

Derek Hale (Teen Wolf)

My werewolf today is the lovely Derek Hale, from MTV's Teen Wolf as played by the were easy on the eyes Tyler Hoechlin.

Derek is my favourite character in Teen Wolf, right after Stiles and, yes, my OTP is Sterek! Derek is a somewhat grumpy beta then alpha then beta werewolf, born into a werewolf family and has a truly tragic past. Almost his entire extended family, were burned alive by rogue werewolf hunters when he was a teenager, and they gained access to the house because one of them seduced his underage self.

His sister Laura became the alpha and they went to New York, but when Teen Wolf opens, Derek has returned to Beacon Hills looking for his sister, who has returned there looking for something and disappered. It is quickly established she is dead.

When Derek becomes alpha he makes some questionable choices, but does, in the end, grow into his role, sacrificing his alpha powers in the end to save someone he loves. Derek is gruff and grumpy, but kind of sweet too, and there is a sense of humour lurking under the dark exterior.

Teen Wolf has some major plot problems, but many of the characters are great and played by brilliant actors. Up to the end of season 4 is worth watching.

Thanks for reading, I hope you approve of my choices today.
  • Are you of the He-Man era, did you have any of the toys?
  • What do you think would be the hardest thing to deal with when being born a werewolf?
See you tomorrow :)

  1. He-man. I used to watch it as a kid... as I watch lots of other cartoons just because they were cartoons. Now I can't figure out what's good abotu it ;-)

I've never seen Teen Wolf, but Derek sounds an intriguing character.

Sorry I disappeared. I have some computer issues over the past few days. Hope this thing won't give me other problems (in general, and especially during the challenge!)

  2. Hi Tasha - I never watched these ... I think I must have missed out too much! Being a werewolf ... I think I'd be wondering what I was doing and cower away most of the time! Cheers Hilary

  3. Oh, He-Man and yes - what were the people of Eternia thinking - oh look, Prince Adam isn't here, but He-Man is, and he's kinda the same size, with the same physique and no-one started to wonder?

You know I'm not a Teen Wolf fan, however hard you try, but Tyler is rather dishy :)

  4. Teen Wolf sounds like such a sad story! Based on your description, it might be a good example of the Hero's Journey.

  5. LOL I agree about He-Man. He didn't even put glasses on! And we all know glasses make your face look so entirely different even the woman who loves you can't recognize you!

  6. He-Man and Adam look the same because the toys were just-repainted versions of the same model. You think they could have used a different head for Adam (maybe with a hat or something) but no one is cheaper than 80s toymakers. Except 80s cartoon studios.

  7. My boys watched He-Man. I don't know that I ever paid attention. But I always watched Superman when I was a kid and wondered why Lois couldn't see the resemblance.

  8. He-man was way after my time of watching cartoons. We watched "Farmer Brown" and "Bug Bunny".

The hardest part of being werewolf for me would be not getting caught when I changed. I think.

  9. He-man! I remember watching He-man in my childhood irrespective of lacking ability to understand a show... I use to think we (me are He-man) have same hair cut and that's relate able enough. So I use to sit with some elder cousins and watch it. HAHA! As I grew up I started liking the show. This post made me nostalgic!
Enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing :)
    Best Wishes!

  10. I missed He-Man. I think I was either in another country those years or another planet because everyone seems to have watched it. Great to read your H post!

  11. I used to watch He-Man but I wasn't mad about it. Didn't pick up on the people of Eternia being so dumb. I didn't have any toys, but I think I had a lunchbox at one point!

  12. I remember He-Man but not Battle Cat. Animal sidekicks are fun. 'Milo', from the movie 'The Mask', comes to mind. I saw the 'Teenage Werewolf' movie starring Michael J. Fox, but not this series. Derek looks rather sexy in a smouldering way. ☺

  13. Have not see the series but thought the movie was cute with MJF.
He-man, I even refer to him in my latest novel!

  14. I think people knew Adam was He-man, but didn't say anything to let He-man think he was getting away with it.

I mean, if there was a super hero saving the world that you knew his secret identity, would you want to tell him he's bad at hiding? I wouldn't. The depression would make him not want to fight, and then who would take his place?

  15. I remember He-Man, but I never really cared for the cartoon and only watched it when there was nothing else on. Maybe I didn't like it because everyone was face blind. ;) (That part made me laugh.)

  16. Now I'm singing the He.man theme tune. My brother and I watched it as kids.

  17. I can't recall if I watched He Man when I was little. I remember bits of it, but I must have been so little that any memories are just gone. I do know I was in love with SheRa. I so wanted to be her.
