YouTube - What They Don't Tell You
P is for Planning
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” – Abraham Lincoln
My AtoZ theme this year is my YouTube journey with my new fiction channel, and all that I have learned - plus some free fiction - scroll down to the embedded vid for that.
Making Youtube videos, coming up with ideas, posting them – all of it is hard work. What can really help is planning. It's time to put to use those lists I talked about back for letter L and make some more. It's very easy to become overwhelmed with all the things that need doing to get our videos made, edited and uploaded, which doesn't even take into account everything we need to do after that point as well. And one of the big things that can be a huge roadblock is coming up with the ideas for individual videos.
The easiest way to remove this burden and allow us to concentrate on other aspects of running a YouTube channel is to plan in advance.

My System
I have brainstorming planning meetings with myself where I decide on a whole month's content at a time. If I'm feeling truly inspired I do more, but I think a month is good enough and doesn't break my brain too much. Now I'm going to breakdown what I do, it may no apply to all channels, but the principle should, unless you're current affairs.
This might sound old fashioned, but I use post-it notes.
Now my channel is for fiction, and to help me and so that I can find out what really works, I have two parts to start my planning.
- Overall genre for the month
- Sub-genre for each week
Then, once I have my genres sorted out, the post-it notes really come into their own, as I write down ideas for each individual story. Some ideas get popped into slots, some get saved for later (never throw away an idea), but brainstorming them I can plan what is coming. This means, when I come to write them, all I have to do is figure out the words, not what I am writing about.
It might not seem it, but this is a huge advantage. My creativity can then be focused, it doesn't have to be split in two directions. This I great for avoiding writer's block.
Once I have everything decided I pop it in a spread sheet so I can't lose it and I can tick it off as I go along.
Summary
Planning allows us to get ahead, at least with the ideas.
It's good to get ahead with making the content too, but as I am finding out, life can really get in the way of that. One day I'll have a million subscribers, be able to pay someone to do all the nitty gritty like editing and advertising, and just worry about the content, so be months ahead in planning, but for now, I am bombing along doing everything myself and sometimes getting vids up hours before they go live.
If I didn't have my plans, I would disappear under the load. So I cannot champion planning enough.
Do you use lots of planning in what you do? Are you good at it, or is it a royal pain?

ReplyDeleteYour system to have a genre and sub genres is v good..
Good luck
Dropping by from a to z "The Pensive"
Thank you. It goes hand in hand with lists 😂 - and I know I would crumble without a good plan.
DeleteIt's amazing how much work you put into this! And also doing the challenge, on top of that, which also takes planning :)
ReplyDeleteThe Multicolored Diary
PLanning is my way of staying sane 😂. After doing my very first year of the AtoZ without a plan, I am with everyone who champions planning for it, although, I have to admit I did mine this year a bit on short notice 😂.
DeleteLove the quote!

Thank you 💖
DeleteBrainstorming with oneself is a great idea. I plan most times but I am doing my daily chapters if my fiction for the a-z challenge without much planning and it's exciting too, though definitely overwhelming
ReplyDeleteVisiting from momandideas.com
That would be too nerve wracking for me! Go you.
DeleteI am a planner for many things, but not when it comes to actual fiction writing. I just leap straight in and start writing when it comes to that. However, I do have to have it done or almost done before I will start publishing it.
I usually have ideas of what kinds of videos I want to make in a month, or which of my blog posts I want to convert into videos, but have never actually written that out in detail.
ReplyDeleteI find it a great help, but we all work differently.
DeleteGood advice all around. Even with blogs and the written word!

Maybe if I did this with my blogs I might get a few more of them done 😂
DeleteThat sounds like an awful lot of work! Mummy made us plan our A to Z, so we could make sure we had things for letters like Q (which is tomorrow). I thought Ludo was very clever to come up with his idea for Q.
ReplyDeleteThat was enough planning for me, for a while, anyway.
love Biggles xxx
Bravo to Ludo for coming up with a Q - Q is a hard letter! I always have trouble with that and Z. Thank you for visiting Biggles.
DeletePlanning does help with everything i guess... with blogs and fiction , ideas strike when we are totally in the middle of something else ...like work or shopping or standing in the bus... jotting down the spark first and then plannig on developing on those makes life easier atleast for blogs
ReplyDeleteI find the worst time for ideas is lying in bed when I know I'm going to forget it if I don't write it down, but I'm so warm and comfy don't want to move.
