AtoZ2018 - M is for ... #MovieMonsters #AtoZChallenge

M is for ...

Hello and welcome all. M is for monster and I have some good ones for you today. Yesterday all my choices were very much 1 skulls, but today we have a couple of nastier ones too.

Scariness Rating

The little skulls by their name are my scariness rating as to how monstrous and scary I think the creatures are when seen in their films.
  •  1 skull (not scary at all) - 5 skulls (very scary)
  •  and there is a special rating for a few - 5 red skulls (utterly terrifying)

Molasar (The Keep)

Now if you visited for G you will know I already mentioned The Keep. Molasar is the bad guy of the piece. The whole keep is a prison designed to keep him in and stop him ravaging the world.

He is at first imprisoned without form, all smoke and not a lot else. However, when Nazi's remove one of the crosses they give him and opening to kill them and, with each kill, he becomes stronger and stronger, slowly taking humanoid form. The picture to the left is about halfway through his evolution.

He has unspecified powers, but shows an abundance of ways to kill others, as well as the ability to heal a human being. He has absolutely no problem lying and encourages allegiance with these falsehoods. He is both a murderous monster and a trickster.

The Keep has many problems as a movie, mostly because it was cut to hell by the production company against the wishes of the director. There is a happy ending floating around somewhere, which was shown on TV once, but the DVD cut doesn't have that part. I still enjoy it immensely though :).

Marshmallow Man (Mr Stay Puft) (Ghostbusters)

So I absolutely had to mention the Mr Stay Puft the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. He is such an original monster and he looks so happy. Like Ray was thinking, how could anyone be afraid of him?

He'd huge and is there to devour all who stand before him. He is Gozer the destroyer. He is also white and looks squishy. Mr Stay Puft is an amazing monster in an amazing film. Ghostbusters is definitely of it's time, but it has become a classic because it is so enjoyable.

Medusa (Clash of the Titans)

Medusa from the original Clash of the Titans is another masterpiece from Ray Harryhausen. Her image has stayed with me since the moment I first saw the film. The CGI'd lady beside her is from the 2010 version of Clash of the Titans.

Medusa is a fantastic monster. A gorgon, she is a fantastic shot with a bow, and anyone who looks her in the eye turns to stone. She is the ultimate badass, with snakes for hair to prove it.

Once she was a woman, but she was cursed, so I always feel sorry for her. The fact that her stare still works after she is dead and her blood is a deadly poison also count to her inclusion in this list.

Mike (Monsters Inc)

Now I suspect even Mike would agree, he's not very scary, but he is definitely a monster. Mike is from the wonderful world of Monsters Inc.. He works with his best friend Sully to make up the most successful scarer team in the business.

Mike is actually a very sweet monster, so much so that his girlfriend, Celia, calls him 'Googlybear'.

He is terrified of Boo, the child, when she comes through to their world, but he backs Sully when he needs him. He also comes into his own when comedy is needed rather than scares.

I love Monsters Inc, it is a fabulous family movie. It has thrills and spills, laughs and just enough drama.

Q: If  you have a monster in your closet, would you prefer Mike or Molasar to have a chat with (no danger involved)? Any M monsters I am missing today?

  1. Mike would be my choice. That puffy monster looks like the Philsbury Dough Boy.

Yup, Mike it would be - I can't come at marshmallows out of the bag, never mind walking the streets. I have a soft spot for the M-133 creature out of "The Man Trap" ep of ST - aka the salt monster... YAM xx

    1. Oh, yes, the salt vampire! But it can appear as anyone you want to see, and act like them too, so whenever I went to my Star Trek’s Christmas party without a costume I would say I was the salt vampire, who had eaten Sue at the door. I suppose it would be okay to chat with if you didn’t let it get you alone...

  4. Probably Mike would be safest, but for scary, the giant marshmallow beats the rest. You see Medusa from a distance, you KNOW not to go near! But a cute looking, smiling marshmallow man that is going to kill you? How scary is THAT?

  8. I feel like Molasar would be fascinating to talk to, even if he only lied, so I'd choose him.

I suppose good old Michael Myers isn't technically a monster, so as far as I can see you're not missing anybody!
