AtoZ2017 - A is for toth-Amon & Andy McDermott #AtoZChallenge

Welcome to Day 1 of the AtoZChallenge and the letter A. Every day in April (except Sundays) I will be making a post about shapeshifters of all kinds as well as werewolf of the day. Check back to see my choices and, from time to time some flash fiction too.

A is for

Toth-Amon (Conan the Destroyer)

Toth-Amon is a powerful socererer from the high fantasy world of Conan the Barbarian. He is character well known to those who read about Conan, but the incarnation I have chosen is from the film Conan the Destroyer. He lives in a castle in the middle of a lake, which guards a gem that is the key to the resurrection of Dagoth, the Dreaming god.

Played by Pat Roach, a staple of many a British production as well as a good few movies, Toth-Amon silenty steals the Princess Jehnna, the only person able to touch the jewel, from under Conan's nose in the dark of the night. He then proceeds to change shape into a hideous, virtually invulnerable monster to beat the stuffing out of Conan as well.

Of course he has a weakness, which Conan finds ( I shalln't say what so there is still a little mystery).

We don't get any back story for him in the movie, so I'm afraid I have no idea why he only has one eye.

Werewolf of the Day

Andy McDermott (An American Werewolf in Paris)

So I know a lot of people hate An American Werewolf in Paris because it is a very loose sequel to An American Werewolf in London (more on that later), which is a classic, and aAWiP is more just a bit of fluff. However, I still love it in all it's cheesy glory.

Andy McDermott (Tom Everett Scott) is in Paris doing the tourist thing with his two friends Brad and Chris. They are also adrenaline junkies and intend to bungeee jump off the Eiffel Tower. Andy rescues Serafine Pigot by jumping after her as she flings herself from the tower in a suicide bid, but she vanishes on him.

The boys then pick the wrong club to visit: "Club de la Lune". (No, nothing about this film is subtle). The owner, Claude, is the head of the local werewolves, who use the club to lure victims for the slaughter. Serafine warns Andy to leave, but is too late. Chris escapes, Brad is killed and Andy is bitten.

There is, however, a way out. Andy can be cured if he eats the heart of the werewolf that bit him. He can also free Brad's spirit by killing the werewolf that killed him. Thus the adventure is set.

This film is cheesy, but it has a coherent plot and some fun characters. It's much lighter than the original movie and, I know this is sacrilidge, but I actually enjoy it more because of that.

Thank you for visiting!
  • Have you seen to Conan movies in all their 80s glory?
  • Do you prefer your comedy horror to be gritty like An American Werewolf in London, or a bit fluffier like An American Werewolf in Paris?
I do my very best to return all comments and visits.  I very much hope you enjoyed my first post for this April. Happy AtoZ!

P.S. I have a family gathering today so I may not have an opportunity to visit many other participants, but I will catch up tomorrow. It's so much easier when we don't start on a Saturday :).

  1. Can't say I'm much of a horror fan, comedy or otherwise, but this was a good synopsis. Great start to the Challenge!

    1. Horror is one of my fav genres, but Conan and his high fantasy are up there too ... some people probably think it's horrific though ... I mean some of the actors chew the scenery ... ;)

Thank you so much for dropping by.

    1. I always enjoy my horror with a little humour and the late 80s and early 90s were a great era for them. Thanks for dropping by. For some reason I had it in my head that you weren't doing this year (I must have you confused with someone else ... not unusual ;)), but I'm so glad you are.

  4. I can honestly say I am not a fan of horror flicks - Although I once dated a guy that had the lead role in a Horror film. I have to agree with the others, comedy is way better than horror. Cheesy is the way to go!

Comedy horror is often a much maligned genre, but it is so much better than some of the gore fests enthusiasts often rave about, IMHO :D. Give me a laugh with my monsters, that's what I say :). Thank you so much for dropping by.

  5. I have never seen An American Werewolf in Paris - how have I avoided that since you have tried to get me to watch it in the past. I know American Werewolf in London is a classic, and I have watched it, but it is rather too dark for me, so I can appreciate it for the great industry defining effects and the well written story, but I just don't like it very much. It sounds like I might prefer this one :)

Sometimes I like a good scare, but I usually go for the haunting scary story, rather than the gory ones, and I prefer the lighter monster movies.

  8. I haven't seen the Conan movies since I was very young, but I love similar films such as Red Sonja and Dragonslayer.

I will shamefully admit I haven't seen either American werewolf movie.

    1. Conan the Destroyer was the first VHS tape I ever bought :). I wanted the Lost Boys, but back then they took years to come out and it had only been in the cinema that summer! Red Sonja is awesome and Dragonslayer is a classic.

Neither of them?! The travesty! ;) If you get a chance they are worth the time.

  9. I did see a Conan film in the eighties as well as An American Werewolf in London. I didn't even know about the Paris version, but I do like my horror terrifying, so I may just skip that one.

    1. Definitely not of the terrifying type :D I like my ghost stories terrifying, but my monster movies simply entertaining. It may of course just be that I believe in ghosts and don't believe in monsters ::g:: Thanks for visiting.

  11. Wow, what cool makeup. I've never watched the series. But American Werewolf, was a good movie, a bit gory but good. Paris wasn't bad, so much blood! LOL I know, and I write books with blood in them all the time. Doesn't mean I want to see it in living color! LOL :)

    1. It's ages since I've seen Paris - I really want to watch it again. I had forgotten about all the blood - LOL. I just read the blurb for The Snowman - I see what you mean about blood :D Thank you so much for visiting.

  13. Me and my nieces and nephews (who are much closer in age to me than my siblings) spent a summer obsessively watching over and over the approximately 6 VHS tapes we owned at the time, one of which was Conan the Destroyer. We were so obsessed with it we would even go outside and act it out when we weren't watching it. It's so funny to look back on!

  14. I think it's a proven fact that having only one eyeball guarantees intrigue and mystery. ;) I've seen some of the Conan movies, long, long time ago when they came on TV for the Sat. or Sun. film. I remember liking them though. I haven't seen any of the American Werewolf films. I do like cheesy horror, but those you need to watch with someone who "gets" it, otherwise it's not as fun. :)

    1. 80s fantasy just has this certain feel about it, doesn't it :) It's a genre very close to my heart.

You should watch aAWiP - it's a lot of fun.

  16. Sometimes changing things up can bring about nuance for the world in which its set, but not easy to do. Unfortunately, I haven't watched any of the films listed here, so I cannot really comment.

  17. I haven't seen either of these movies, but did enjoy their predecessors. Toth-Amon sounds like a worthy adversary for Conan. The Werewolf sequel sounds like fun and wh doesn't like Paris as a backdrop?

  18. I actually need to catch up on all these films, but I do love a good werewolf story. I appreciate both cheesy and sinister, but the film with Michael J Fox has to be the ultimate cheese!

I know it's sacrelige, but I find bits of the first American Werewolf a bit boring. Parts of it are amazing, but other bits leave me wanting to forward wind. I prefer the faster moving second one :).
