AtoZChallenge2015 - O is for Onimar Synn

Fictional Deities and Demons - AtoZ 2015
Hello and welcome to day 15 of the AtoZChallenge 2015.

Now I'm usually a Marvel girl, but I have dipped into DC to bring you Onimar Synn. He is an extraterrestrial demon who feasts on souls for nourishment and adds his kills to his zombie army. He is a foe to the Justice Society of America.

He hails from the planet Thanagar, homeworld of the hawk-like Thanagarians. Early in the planet's history it was plagued by seven demons and Onimar Synn was the nastiest of them all. He was originally defeated by their great hero Kalmoran, who imprisoned him underground in a cage of Nth Metal (a metal with some very useful properties).

Unfortunately, after a war on Thanagar, Onimar Synn escaped his imprisonment and started to take over the planet. He collected Nth Metal and used its properties to increase his power. He is defeated this time by Hawkman and Hawkgirl using the Claw of Horus together to disrupt his Nth Metal body.

However, it's hard to keep a good demon down and he returns in a later war. This time the heroes who defeat him split his body into seven parts to put in the centre of a different suns to stop him reforming again. Now that is a serious demon.

  2. Wow, that is some real effort to bury a demon in the center of seven suns. I love that you are a Marvel girl, too. Way to get out of your comfort zone!

  3. I was a sci-fi girl, but I never got into super heroes. My young daughter has and she's a Justice League girl - she used to wear her Wonder Woman costume everywhere! We haven't come across Ominar Syn, but now I'm excited to.

    1. I've always loved superheroes - my latest book even has superheroes in it :). It was 80s cartoons that got me hooked - at least that's what I blame and Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk - both of which I now have on DVD. Wonder Woman is brilliant, I can see why your daughter used to wear her costume :)

  4. That is quite a demon - I love the way he was killed though, feels very in keeping with a mythological monster.

  5. Yay, Onimar Synn! A seriously bad ass demon and a worthy opponent :-D I'm a DC fan (and Marvel too) so it's great to seem him here!

    1. Well Oni are a form of Japanese demon, mar can mean bad and synn, is probably sin, at least that's what I'd guess, but I have absolutely not idea if it's true :)

  9. The whole DC and Marvel universes confuse me! I rely on my kids to tell me who's who. So just imagine me reading this post, nodding, but with a slightly bewildered look on my face ;-)

  10. Onimar certainly lives up to his Ominous name. Wow, Nth Metal must be some powerful stuff and the opposite to Kryptonite...depending on what Superhero you are into. I agree with Stephanie....all these names are a mouthful and a pronouncer/linguists nightmare.

I always wanted to wear a Wonder Woman Costume, but keeping up the top was an issue. I really want to fit in here, so is there an Ominous Sleeping Beauty?

    1. I love how in comics it is perfectly acceptable to produce a convenient plot device like nth metal when dealing with superpowers :) I once went to a convention dressed as Xena - it was fun and quite a few years ago ;) I'm sure we could make up and Ominous Sleeping Beauty :)

  11. That sounds like some DC overkill :D Not like Marvel never does stuff like that... But still, seven suns :D

    1. Superhero stories should always have a little bit of overkill somewhere - it makes them epic :)

  12. I stuck to a limited range of comics as a kid (Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, X-Men, Spawn) and while I had a few Justice League books I certainly never encountered Onimar Synn. Super hero stories just get more and more over the top, don't they?

    1. I've never been into comics to tell the truth - I love cartoons and movies and annuals and books and they are always the most over the top :) I find the actual comics too dark for my tastes a lot of the time, or I can't stand to wait to find out what's going on!

  13. I'm not big into comics so I never heard of this guy before. He certainly sounds like a demon and lives up to that title.

  16. I just looked at your profile, LOL, (I'm slow here sometimes). How cool to have a twin :)

Wow with Onimar feasting on souls. Made me wonder. Do all souls taste the same? If someone is gentle, is their soul tasty? Is someone angry and bitter, their soul tough tasting?

Now that is something I have never considered - do demons go after the innocent because they taste better? :)

  17. Hi Tasha .. I sure hope those 7 pieces don't all come back to sun life again - he sounds a real horror ... Betty raises an interesting question ... I wonder if Onimar can tell us?! Cheers Hilary

  21. The idea of a zombie army always strikes terror in my heart.

    1. Yes, totally, milling zombies are bad enough, but an army, with direction ... even worse!

  22. Yeah that would pretty much stop the demon from reforming. Until the last star explodes as stars do. Then he'd be free again to reform.

    1. But by then nobody who did it would likely care and it's possible the world he's trying to destroy would be gone to, so, yeah, he'd have to pick on someone else :) Or the pieces might get stuck in the resulting black holes.

  23. Hawk girl is an excellent reason to "cheat" on Marvel--though I still think she's far too feminist to allow anyone to call her "girl."

  24. Well, if he has a zombie army, he can't be all that bad, right? I know I need to brush up on my DC before their cinematic universe begins. :)

    1. LOL - depends on your definition of all bad I suppose ;)

  25. I've never heard of Onimar Synn, he sounds pretty cool. And are you saying that he was restrained in a cage made out of a metal that, ultimately, he used to increase his own power? Because if so, it sounds like a serious facepalm moment for Kalmoran there. ;)

    1. I think while he was in the cage it contained him, but once he was free of the cage he could use it's properties to enhance his own strength ... I think ... I am no expert :)
