AtoZ2018 - E is for ... #MovieMonsters #AtoZChallenge

E is for ...

And we're on to E - the letter in the English language that is used the most. It was surprisingly hard to come up with enough Es however - you've think there would be more monsters beginning with E given that evil starts with it, wouldn't you. :)

Scariness Rating

The little skulls by their name are my scariness rating as to how monstrous and scary I think the creatures are when seen in their films.
  •  1 skull (not scary at all) - 5 skulls (very scary)
  •  and there is a special rating for a few - 5 red skulls (utterly terrifying)

Evil Robot Bill and Ted (Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey)

So these two idiots come from Bill and Ted's Bogus journey, where Chuck De Nomolus sends back in time evil robot versions of Bill and Ted to kill them and then ruin their reputation to prevent the future they created.

These guys have no remorse and really, really enjoy causing trouble. They are also morons, which is helpful to the good guys, of course. We can tell they're bad because they wear sunglasses all the time!

The Bill and Ted movies are iconic and absolutely brilliant. They are silly fun that are a pleasure to watch. If you haven't seen them, you really should - they will make you smile and laugh. So hope they finally get to do the third one soon.

Eve/Sil (Species 2)

Eve is a clone of Sil from the original movie Species, but with her alien DNA repressed. In Species, Sil was created using instructions from an alien transition, which showed how to splice alien DNA into human DNA. When she grew into a 12 year old in 3 months and showed violent tendencies, her creators tried to destroy her, so she broke out, grew into a woman and tried to breed.

Eve was created to attempt to discover weaknesses in the alien species in case it ever comes back to earth. Of course it doesn't work and she ends up going from human to alien, just like her predecessor.

Eve/Sil is a weapon designed to destroy the human race. Her one instinct is to mate and produce offspring, killing while she does so. The species are also psychically linked, giving them an advantage over isolated humans. In her alien form Eve is very strong and completely dedicated to her cause.

Species is all about introducing an apex predator into a closed echo system, something which always results in disaster for the existing ecology. The first 2 are great films with great monsters.

Edgar the Bug (Men in Black)

Edgar is a farmer in upstate New York who comes across an alien crash site. The bug inside kills him and uses his skin as a disguise, hence Edgar the bug.

Edgar is on earth searching for 'the galaxy', which, if he finds it, could cause a very nasty war. In his search he is willing to kill anyone that gets in his way, and torture people for information. He is a very nasty monster indeed, and he somehow creepier when he's Edgar, because of the wonderful performance from Vincent D'Orofrio.

The Men in Black franchise has three great movies - each one is entertaining and fun, but I have a soft spot for the original. Edgar is such a great villain.

Ellen Rimbauer (Rose Red)

Ellen Rimbauer is the monster from one of my favourite mini-series, Rose Red. Ellen starts off as a well-to-do young wife of an oilman John Rimbauer. While on honeymoon she almost dies, but gains a loyal African servant Sukeena.

Once back in the US, she has two children and is told by a psychic, that as long as she is building Rose Red, the home John built for her, she will not die. So she starts extending it. After her daughter, April, vanishes, and her husband attacks Sukeena for it, Ellen has had enough and kills John.

In 1950 she and Sukeena disappear, but they are not gone. They have become monsters in the house. Rose Red is the power, 'eating' women to help continue the building and killing men.

Ellen is barely seen in most of the mini-series, but when she does appear she is terrifying, which is why she gets 5 red skulls. She can appear human, but when she is mad she is definitely not. Rose Red is all about a team of psychics and researchers going into Rose Red which they call a 'dead cell' to see what they can find and the house likes the fresh meat. It is a great mini-series, well worth watching.

Q: What sort of monster scares you the most, alien or supernatural? Do you have any E monsters to add to my list?

    1. Only Ellen really scared me, and that's mostly because Rose Red has such a good set up to be scary. One of Stephen King's best IMHO.

  7. EDGAR! D'Onofrio really knocked that out of the ballpark.
Are they really making another Bill and Ted movie?...

    1. He so did.
Yes, they are trying to get someone to fund it. I believe they have a plot and everything and Keanu and Alex did a photoshoot with the booth recently too.

  8. Absolutely loved D'Onofrio's role as Edgar! And on the whole I suppose supernatural monsters scare me a lot more than aliens. Just hits a little close to home for me, haha

    1. He was superb, wasn't he. I agree - not many alien type monsters make me more than jump if the film is using shock tactics, where as supernatural monsters have me hiding behind cushions ;) and not watching them when I'm along :P

  12. The first 3 are all great films and monsters in their own genres. Not sure about the last one, but it looks the scariest of this bunch!

  13. The only one I have seen is men in Black and Vincent was excellent and I thought deserved an Oscar nom. I haven't seen the others but i scare so easily and dream about things that I better not catch that miniseries which reminds me a bit of the Winchester House

  14. I haven't seen any of these heh. Not even the Bill and Ted one, which is weird because I liked the first one. That Ellen does look pretty creepy though.

  15. I am superglad that I haven't seen Rose Red :-)

  16. Eve as herself wasn't scary, for sure - and a good reason for me to keep watching the Species series. But then she became Sil and creeped me out. Evil Bill & Ted amused me. Never saw the other two monsters, although Rose Red was a tempting series.

  17. I always found Edgar the Bug creepy but funny: "Give me sugar. In water. More. More!" Never seen Red Rose but it does look terrifying. I guess I'm scared by supernatural monsters more, specifically ones that appear human-esque but not quite.

  18. Edgar gives me the creeps; usually it's the supernatural monsters who freak me out more than the aliens.

  19. Edgar the bug, lol, I'd forgotten him! Yes, he was totally creepy. :) Great memory!

  20. Eve scared me senseless when I watched the movie... Probably shouldn't watch scary movies late at night ;-)
