G - Grace Stewart - Fictional Phantoms #AtoZChallenge 2016

Good morning and welcome to Fictional Phantoms on day 7 of the AtoZChallenge and the letter G. Today I only have one ghost for you, but she definitely leads to more.

Grace Stewart (The Others)

Grace Stewart lives an isolated life in a big house on Jersey as she waits for her husband to return from the war.

Her two children, Anne and Nicholas have a rare condition which means light causes terrible sores on their skin and could even kill them. Hence they cannot go outside and every room they are in can only be lit by candles. Every door is locked to make sure they cannot be accidentally exposed to light.

Grace is a very strict Roman Catholic and does not believe her children when they tell her the house it haunted by a boy called Victor.

With the help of a gardener, a maid and a cook they live their lonely lives, never leaving the house and haunted by Victor and an old woman.

As it turns out, however, it is Grace, her children and her staff that are the ghosts.

Alone and grief stricken Grace went mad and smothered her children, killing herself when she realised what she had done. Those "haunting" the house are in fact the living who occasionally intrude on the spirit world.

Do you think there are ghosts who don't know they're dead?

    1. It's a good one isn't it. I like it more every time I see it. The first time it didn't grab me, but I think that's because I was expecting something else - now I love it.

  2. Great movie! And I've always wanted to see a ghost—it seems like such a romantic (okay, creepy, too) notion—but it's never happened.

    1. I've never seen one, only heard a few. My husband is more likely to see one than me, his family seem to run into ghosts all over the place :)

  3. I saw this movie and hated it! Not really, it was well done, but I didn't realize they were the ghosts until well into the movie. I was sad. I hate to be sad watching a movie. The sixth sense was another one that bothered me. Well done both of them though. I hate the creepy feeling you get when the presence of a ghost is felt. I freak, and then run in the other direction! :)

    1. I wasn't won over the first time I saw it, but the more times I have watched it, the more I like it. :) I wonder why ghosts set off the fear response - are we pre-conditioned or do they just interact in a really weird way?

  4. That sounds like a scary movie. o.o
I think there are ghosts out there who have no idea.

    1. Seems sad that they must be wandering around wondering why no one will talk to them.

  5. I didn't know the premise of this movie; sounds ghastly in a way! Bruce Willis' character in Sixth Sense was dead, yet thought he was alive, right?

  6. I don't know the movie but it sounds interesting, I scare easily so avoid a lot of ghost/horror movies but I do love a good story! After the challenge I may well be picking back through your A to Z to try a few!

  7. That would be so disconcerting to find out you're the ghost. I haven't seen the film and normally don't like scary movies, but this one sounds interesting and after reading your comment above that it isn't too scary, I might give it a go.

  8. What an absolutely fascinating concept. I don't go to the movies very much either.

    1. This one is just as enjoyable on the computer or the TV - it's good on the big screen, but it's not paramount.

  9. I still have to watch this movie. Maybe there are some ghosts who don't know they're dead, although I tend to think ghosts are just residual energy.

    1. I definitely think some of the things we define as ghosts are simply recording on the environment from the past, but I have my doubts that they all are :)

    1. Me too. Shock does strange things to human beings so I don't see why the ultimate shock might not warp a ghost's reality.

  14. This is such a good movie! I'd love to see it again, especially now that I know the ending.
I do think there can be ghosts that don't know they're dead, especially when death is sudden and unexpected and especially when the spirit is stuck between worlds...

Humans lose their way all the time, I think it's quite logical that their spirits might too.

  25. I'm sure that if there are ghosts, then there are those among them that don't believe they are dead. Maybe even a lot. Death is probably a pretty traumatic event for most people. It makes sense that they wouldn't want to remember it.

  26. I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie. Now I need to sit down and watch it, even knowing the plot twist. I know nothing about ghosts.

  28. I loved that movie so much. I think it got overlooked by many because The Sixth Sense was released first.

I'm sure there are ghosts that don't realize they're dead. I've heard of ones that repeat the same routine everyday, as if they were still alive.

    1. They are such different films too, in atmosphere and setting. I like them both a lot for different reasons.

I wonder if it's harder to not realise you're dead or to understand that life as you knew it is now gone?

  31. This is a favourite movie. Such a twist at the end! Although I'm not a believer in such things as ghosts, it makes for a fascinating story to be dead and not realize it.
