F - Robert Fraser & The Flying Dutchman - Fictional Phantoms #AtoZChallenge 2016

Day 6 already - the AtoZChallenge is going fast this year. Hope you have all had a good one so far. Welcome to my blog and my theme of Fictional Phantoms. Today I have two very different ghosts for you, one will follow a criminal to the ends of the earth, the other has to sail all its days to the ends of the earth and back again.

Robert "Bob" Fraser (Due South)

Bob Fraser (Gordon Pinsent) was a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the father of Benton Fraser (Paul Gross) in the highly successful 1990s drama, Due South.

Bob is murdered in the very first episode and we are introduced to his son Benton as he tries to solve his father's case.

After death Bob returned to help his son as a ghost, giving sage advice and later appearing to others as well. In life he was the embodiment of the RCMP; honest, brave, loyal and could track anyone, especially through the wilderness. All these qualities he then passed on to his son.

In death he maintained these values and refused to move on while his son needed him. Sometimes this led to very amusing situations.

The Flying Dutchman (Pirates of the Caribbean)

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that is cursed to sail the seas forever and never make port again. It is believed that the legend originated in the 17th century, but it has been used many times in fiction. According to nautical law, sightings of the ship mean certain doom.

In Pirates of the Caribbean the ship is mostly known just at The Dutchman and she is captained by Davy Jones. Calypso was Jones' lover and gave him The Dutchman to ferry nautical lost souls to the afterlife.

When she failed to make their appointed meeting after 10 years he took The Dutchman and began to wander the seas, bringing down a curse on him, his ship and his crew. All who sail her have become monsters and she is doom to all who meet her on the seas.

What would you do if a dead relative suddenly popped up to give you advice?

  1. Depended on the advice.:)
I've never heard of Due South, the the pirate movies, oh yeah! Great stories!

  2. I'd like to think I'd listen if a dead relative showed up to offer me advice, but really, I'd just think I was asleep. It would be like that scene in A Christmas Carol, "You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There's more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"

I do like the friendly ghost in Robert Fraser :)

    1. Good point - if it was one of the grumpy just whines about everything relatives, I suppose it would have less impact ;)

  6. I enjoyed Due South mainly I think because it was so innocent - an easy watch - you have a great collection of ghosts here will pop back again to keep up

as to what I would do if a dead relative came back with advice I would also think i was asleep - there is no way I would believe it I'm afraid - they are fiction only - but if I did believe in them I might listen and carry on doing what I had decided!!:)

    1. Yep, that's one of the things that made Due South so much fun.

Thank you :) I'm sorry - your profile doesn't come up so I can't visit back. Leave me a link and I will.

  7. If a dead relative came back to offer advice, I would listen to them if they didn't do it in a creepy, scary way and if their advice seemed well thought out.

Never got a chance to watch Due South.

  9. I remover bits and pieces of due south, but it's been a long time. I don't remember the dad.

If a relative popped in to say howdy from the next plane, I would probably widdle myself

  10. Oh, I want to watch Due South. Sounds like a good series to share with my mother on our quilting days.

I'm pretty open to listening, so I guess that wouldn't change with a trusted ghost's advice.

  23. Answering the question: I would listen very carefully. :D And then ask a bunch of questions.
I do love the Flying Dutchman :) And I think Pirates of the Caribbean did it a fair amount of justice too :)

  29. Due South was a great show, and I had to watch it if I got the chance.

To me The Flying Dutchman is the legend behind Wagner's opera of the same name.

If a dead relative wants to give me some clearer hints on life than they do in my dreams, I'd welcome them in...after being a little freaked out, of course.

In Spongebob (lol), The Flying Dutchman is the pirate instead of the ship.

  31. I love Due South. Such a pity they don't show it on TV any longer.

  32. Even though I'm Canadian I've never watched Due South. I did know Gordon Pinsent was in it, but wasn't aware he played a ghost. Interesting! I would question my sanity if a dead relative popped up, as I don't believe in ghosts.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my favourite movie franchises, so I know all about The Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones. Bill Nighy was amazing in that role!

  33. It gives me shivers just to think about ghosts - I don't know what I would do if I really saw one!

I remember watching a few episodes of Due South, but it never really caught my interest much. My husband and I have recently watched a show called River where one of the characters is murdered in the first episode and the rest of the season is solving her murder (and a few other crimes, but mostly hers). He knows that she is dead though, so it brings him comfort to have her there. I guess if I knew that the person was dead, maybe it wouldn't be so scary?
