Now, on to the heads up for all authors.
The site ebooks-tree(dot)com (I am not linking directly so they don't get the SEO) is stealing work and using it to extort credit card information from people. They also have copyright works by many famous authors.
I have so far found 2 of my books listed there for download and a large number of my fanfics lifted from AO3.
Authors, go and check to see if your work has been stolen.
To get it removed you need to use this format:

(2). These exclusive rights are being violated by material available upon your site at the following URL(s):

Use their contact form with "DMCA Complaint" in the subject line.
UPDATE (15-Apr-15): All my works (bar one of my fanworks) seem to have been removed, so it looks like the process does actually work.
Thanks! I believe my books are there, as well.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with getting them taken down. I haven't heard anything back from the actual website yet, just CloudFlare saying they're just a reverse proxy.
DeleteThanks for this! I'll be checking.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this! I'll be checking.
ReplyDeleteHope you don't find anything :)
DeleteThanks for the heads up! Kind of weird, I searched my name, and a pdf file came up. But when I searched for my books, nothing showed. Do they have a dossier on me? (haha!) I'm afraid to click and find out cause I don't trust the site to not infect my computer with a virus.
ReplyDeleteOk, never mind, it looks like it's just a weird search feature function. I don't think there's anything there. Anyway, hope you get it sorted!
It could all just be a scam site and there really is nothing there, they are just pretending to get credit card details. If so, they picked the wrong target, I think fandom has probably just inundated them with thousands of emails.
DeleteYikes. I'll share this in my writer group, so everyone can check. That really is too bad. :(
ReplyDeleteIt is very annoying - there is always someone out there ready to scam and try and make money off other people's hard work.
DeleteI've found my work on at least three sites without my permission. Thanks for posting the link and I'll see if I'm there, too.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're not affected this time - it's always a royal pain.
DeleteAwesome! Great tips. I'm not important enough to be on there, which is great. But I have been notified by Google alerts that my book is showing up as a "free download." The links always look suspicious, though, so I always avoid clicking on them for fear of a virus.
ReplyDeleteYes, I've had that too - looks like the same kind of site usually. They offer downloads as a scam.
DeleteHi Tasha .. I've sent this off to another blogger who was wondering about his work .. I don't have any - but so useful you're posting .. cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteNo probs - it's all over Tumblr because they decided to scrape AO3 (big mistake) so I thought it best to share. The seems to have done a mass take down, so yay!
DeleteThanks for this. Shame there's always someone ready to rip people off.
ReplyDeleteIt is - so frustrating!
