AtoZChallenge2015 - W is for WxrtHltl-jwlpklz

Fictional Deities and Demons - AtoZ 2015
Hello and welcome to day 23 of the AtoZChallenge 2015.

Today I am talking about another characters from the books of the awesome and much mourned, Sir Terry Pratchett.

WxrtHltl-jwlpklz (which I have to copy and paste every time because it's a nightmare) is a demon and appears in Wyrd Sisters. Nanny Ogg accused him of being behind the door when the vowels were handed out.

When he manifested he was kind of handsome, but, being a demon, he was 'a little cruel around the eyes and beaky about the nose'. He also declared his name unpronounceable by human tongues, however, Granny Weatherwax soon proved him completely wrong about that.

He is the one who reveals to the witches that the kingdom itself is unhappy because it is being ruled by a man who hates it after being threatened with boiling. Once he has revealed his knowledge he is banished with the wonderful words:
"Oh yes, run along."
He is not overly pleased.

  1. I've only read Good Omens, the book he cowrote w/ Neil Gaiman. Loved it. So darn outrageous, in that Tom Robbins kind of way. Sounds like a fun read. Looks like Terry typed random letters to come up with name.

Show off! (Wink!) I haven't even written my W post.

  2. Boo, Blogger is misbehaving again and not letting me comment. In any case, great review, thank you for making it spoiler free! (I'm looking forward to seeing where the characters go from here on out!)

  3. Nooo, I tried to copy my comment for this post because I knew Blogger would eat it... guess it didn't go through. :(

In any case, got Scribd. Looking forward to reading them for the first time. Sorry about the duplicate comment!

  4. So sad that the wonderful Terry Pratchett died. He was a brilliant writer who appealed to readers young and old - that's quite an art.

  5. I'm not familiar with this author. I'm going to have to check him out. Love that you have to copy and past the name every time.

  6. I'm not familiar with this author. I've heard about him on two different blogs this month. Names does sound interesting and mind boggling to have to write over and over.

  7. No nothing about the mentioned author, but I am learning a lot from all your posts and introductions to some great characters.

  8. I'm still in mourning over Pratchett.

Favourite character is a tough one. Still love Rincewind - the original is often the best. But Carrot, Moist, The Patriarch, all of the wizards (they're kinda all one character) and Granny Og are all fabulous.

But if I had to pick just one, it would have to Death.

Even if he is a dick.

WE MEET AT LAST, SIR TERRY.

  9. I love Sir Terry and all his books. He had a great sense of humor, but also great empathy, both for people and for the world...

  13. Where would one even begin on pronouncing that name? Sheesh!

  14. That name is a nightmare to type! I've yet to read most of Terry Pratchet's books. I know, shame on me. They sound so amazing though.

My latest post for the Blogging A to Z Challenge.

  15. A lot of people have praised me for remembering the names of all my characters and working with so many characters period, but even I'd never be able to remember a name like that! I'd have no idea how to even attempt pronouncing that.

  16. Now there's an original character name. Does it come with a pronunciation guide??

I'm among the few who haven't read Terry Pratchett. Not sure how that's happened, but he's on my list, so it'll happen eventually.

  18. Sir Terry will be sadly missed. His characters are highly entertaining and the worlds he created are something else. I loved your summary of WxrtHltl-jwlpklz (yep, I had to copy and paste too!).

  19. I'm not familiar with this author. From the comments it appear that I must live in a cave as I am the only person who hasn't read these books. Perhaps I need to.

  20. It's certainly unpronounceable for me. I don't know how Terry Pratchett could type that out every time.

  21. Death. Has to be and his daughter in the hog father. Have you watched the movie they did of it. I only caught it once but what I saw of it was pretty good.

  22. I will be honest. I have not read any Discworld books. Hangs head in shame.

  23. How do you pronounce that? Certainly works for 'W' :)

  24. Massive Terry Pratchett fan - I went into serious mourning the day he died and was out of sorts for several days. This (not going to try and type his name!) was one of my favourite demon characters - Granny's dismisal of him was hillarious! For a long time the Witches were my favourties of his books, until I found the Gaurds books - my all-time favourite is Night Watch.

Back to the demon - if you get the chance to listen to the audio book of Wyrd Sisters I recomend it - just to listen to the reader pronounce the demon's name! :)

  25. Hi Tasha - I could never get to grips with Terry Pratchett years ago ... and now I really must try again ... especially having read various posts and yours here re 'that name' .. and see Roslyn's comment from above .. fun .. so I shall be having a read.

Great W choice too .......... Cheers Hilary

  26. Haha, that's awesome! I wonder if Mr. Pratchett also had a cat that helped him type from time to time. ;)

  27. The witches ruled, full stop. This was a really funny scene.

Like others here, Death is my favourite. A comsummate professional but it was fun when he went off the rails and tried to be human. I also have a soft spot for Vimes, Gaspode, Susan, the Patrician... so many!
